Back To School Shopping Tips

Back To School Collage

I cannot believe it’s that time of year again already!  Back to school!  This year, my youngest, Charlie is starting Kindergarten and she is crazy excited!

Both Charlie and my favorite part of the beginning of a new school year is the shopping!  I love that we have that in common! Charlie is really into picking out her own clothes now, and is coming up with her own little sense of style!  I think she’s starting to love kids fashion as much as I do!

The store I can always count on to have things we both adore is Oshkosh B’gosh!

Year after year, my favorite thing about Oshkosh is that their clothing is always classically cute, comfy and perfect for the playground.  Each season, they make it super simple to to put together awesome and versatile outfits!   Charlie and I wanted to show you how simple it is to make lots of different outfits using only a few different pieces! This is our favorite way to stretch out our back to school budget!

Speaking of budgets, we are excited to get to offer you an exclusive 25% off coupon code from Oshkosh just for our readers!  Head on over HERE and use the code: OKBG3136 from now through the 26th!  Don’t miss out, that’s a huge savings!!

Start by picking out your child’s favorite piece in the store.  You know, that piece they are going to beg to wear every day…that they will even want to sleep in.  This is the piece you will want to center your easily interchangeable looks around! This will cut back on the amount of getting ready fits you’ll have to deal with in the mornings! 🙂 Then you’ll want to pick out one or two pairs of pants, a skirt and a jacket or two that all coordinate, that you can mix and match all year!

This little button up floral shirt was Charlie’s favorite piece!  I personally love the pop of bright colors, how it’s a little bit lower in the back than it is in the front, and that the flowers give a good base to made it girly and dress it up, or easily dress it down. The fabric is light weight, so it’s perfect for the upcoming cooler weather, but it breathes, so she won’t get too hot on the days that decide to get a little warmer in the afternoon.

This post is sponsored by Everywhere Agency on behalf of OshKosh B’gosh; however, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

For our first outfit, we picked these bright orange pants that played on the pop of color in the shirt.  I love to have a good bright color pants for back to school.  These are stretchy and soft and easy to pull on.  The stretch makes them perfect for play and easy pulling on and off.  We paired it with a denim jacket and a cute headband and some gold flats to finish off the look

For our second outfit, we went with a little bit more of a toned down look, perfect for the first day of school.  We chose some dark denim jeggings that will go with everything, some pink glitter flats and an army green cargo jacket. Oh and of course, it wouldn’t be complete without an extra cute accessory, like these purple clip in kitty ears!  I am in love with this look, and this cargo jacket is going to be a major staple in Charlie’s closet this fall and winter!

For the third outfit, we wanted to show how you can make the shirt a little more dressy and girly by adding a skirt!  This white eyelet skirt was just right.  Since she’ll be on the playground a lot, we put it with some sparkle high tops!  Tuck the shirt in for a more sophisticated, put together look. Perfect for picture day! Either jacket pictured earlier would also go great over this outfit!

Here is the list of things I look for when shopping at Oshkosh each back to school season:

  1. Your child’s favorite item
  2. One or two pairs of jeans
  3. Two or three pairs of shoes
  4. A skirt or a dress
  5. One or two jackets
  6. panties
  7. accessories

Follow these simple tips when shopping:

  1. Get plenty of basic denim, it’s the most versatile thing in the closet! This would include jeans, shorts, jackets, overalls and button up shirts!
  2. Have each jacket be one that will work with all of the shirt/skirt/pant combos possible.
  3. Pick one statement piece (such as the bright colored pants in this post).
  4. Choose a couple of pairs of shoes that will go with each outfit.
  5. If your child is going into pre-k or kindergarten, try to pick things they can easily put on themselves, including slip on shoes and pants with elastic at the waist.  The more independent they can feel in the mornings, the better!
  6. LAYER!  When you layer, they can peel off pieces of clothing as the day gets warmer while they are at school!

If you’re eager to get to shopping, which I’m sure you are now, you can find a store near you using this store locator.

This blog post is also centered around one of our favorite packing tips:  pick one staple piece of clothing and make different outfits around it to save on suit case space!  An awesome tip to keep in mind for spring break, winter break or your next family vacation!

We hope this post helped inspire some cute back to school looks for your little one’s back to school shopping this year! Happy #backtobgosh!

Flower Braided Bun

Learn how to do this intricate bun style!

I would consider this braid a difficult braid, but mainly because of how time consuming it is.  The only braid you need to know how to do is a lace braid, which means you add hair in on one side like you would a French braid, and simply cross one section over like you would a regular three strand.

This braid consists of 5 “petals” or 10 half “petals”

This would be amazing for a wedding or prom style!

Happy Braiding!

Easy Elastics Style

Today I wanted to show you how to do this super simple style using elastics!  It’s similar to our previous tutorial The Knitted Braid but with a twist!

The best part is that it stays in REALLY well!  It looks like a three strand braid from the back, but the side views look like the knitted braid!

I’ll post a link to the video tutorial at the end, but below is a pictorial for you!

First you’re going to need to pull the hair back into a ponytail!  High or low, it’s up to you!

Split the ponytail into three equal parts, as if you were going to do a three strand braid.

Now you’re going to take the farthest right section and split that into two equal parts!

Just like a three strand braid, you want your right section to become your new middle section. Instead of just switching places with the two like normal, you’re going to put the middle one in between the sections you divided. So the right section you divided into two pieces is going to go around the middle as you switch places.  Then use an elastic to tie the two pieces together.

Now go to the left hand section and repeat the same step as above. Split it in two, then go around the middle section you just used an elastic on and secure it in the middle.

This braid is a little bit hard to explain in photos, so you might want to watch my new video so you can see it in action!  Here it is:
